We hired Steve to install a new air conditioner on our home. The initial visit was pleasant enough; Steve provided us with an estimate for the new AC and additional duct work after a cursory review of our HVAC setup. He recommended a unit we had never heard of, talking us out of many of our initial ideas about brand, SEER rating, & tonnage. Because Steve had been referred to us, we gave him the benefit of the doubt. First mistake. Trusting Steve as the expert, we signed the papers, and scheduled a time for the install. First day, Steve was 5 hours late with no notice. After hours of waiting and several phone calls, he finally arrived and was surprised at our frustration. His next visit, same story. He was a no-call, no-show the entire morning, and I was aggravated. After calling Steve to request an accurate time of his arrival and a better line of communication, he scolded me on the phone, informing me that he does not keep a strict appointment schedule and that he would arrive when he was available. At this point, my gut said I should cancel the contract, pay him for his time thus far, and walk away. I did not. Second mistake. During Steve's last few visits, I resigned to his "rough idea" philosophy. I would leave for work in the morning, and hope to come home to completed work on our AC system. I was able to snag Steve for an abbreviated Q&A session at the end of one work day, but his answers were distracted and curt. I asked him why he had removed our old automatic thermostat and replaced it with a downgraded manual thermostat. His answer, "Most people nowadays request a manual thermostat." There was one appointment Steve was not late for: the final payday. For what its worth, Steve delivered what he promised; there was cool air coming from a brand new unit on our home. As for my wife and I, we were happy to have the project completed and to (cross our fingers) never have to deal with Steve Dick again. This is where it gets interesting: 4 months after the initial install, the valley had a pretty decent monsoon storm. The next morning, we noticed a large puddle beneath our air return vent. We called Steve and left a message about the issue. No response. During the next major storm, we again had leakage in the same spot and some additional roof damage. This time, we called Steve and a roofer. After installing a brand new roof on our home, we thought we were in the clear. Until the next storm, when we were greeted by that same puddle beneath the air return. Over the course of the year, we called Steve a total of 5 times, leaving as many messages requesting an appointment to remediate the issue. He never once returned our phone calls. Interesting note: we did manage to reach Steve last month (1 year and 3 months after the date of install). He said he could come take a look, but because our 1-year workmanship warranty had expired, he would have to charge us. To this day, our air return vent still leaks during storms.
